There's a lot of tests for hormone levels and looking into his medical history to figure out why he's presenting now instead of 16+ years ago. The smart money is apparently on him not having had stable enough pack bonds between Maddie leaving with Doug and integrating into the 118 for his body to feel safe enough to present. And then there were the multiple near-death and actual-death experiences, not to mention a stressful and dangerous career.
He's not exactly surprised when the answer to the question why now? is: probably Tommy. Presentations this late can usually be traced to either a recent massive improvement in health/pack bonds, or the introduction of someone very biologically compatible into your life.
Buck spends the rest of his heat at home, in a proper nest filled with items donated by his pack members, primarily monitored by either Maddie or Bobby. Afterwards, there's more tests to make sure he's developing about as well as can be expected of his situation and a very strong suggestion that he spend plenty of time with pack to help his recovery and transition from assumed-beta to omega. He's pretty sure this means Maddie's going to set up another schedule of visitors like she did when he was recovering from the lightning strike, but honestly, he's kind of okay with that? The company settles something in him.
But there's someone else he wants to see, so when he has the privacy, he pulls up Tommy's contact in his phone: officially made it through my heat intact.
